Nene Rivers Trust - DIVERSITY Statement
The Nene Rivers Trust (NRT) are committed to finding ways to reflect on and address the main forms of separation and oppression that characterise our modern industrial societies – including, in no particular order: Patriarchy; White Supremacy; and the Desacralisation of Nature at large. As white people from the global north we recognise that we carry these patterns into all that we do and we commit to raising our own awareness of these unconscious patterns and to learning from our brothers and sisters in the global majority how to be better allies and better citizens.
Nene RIvers Trust - PRINCIPLES
At NRT we are guided by a set of principles that ensure our projects deliver authentic, measurable, and lasting environmental and social impact. These principles reflect our commitment to science-based nature recovery, collaboration with local communities, and alignment with global sustainability goals. Every project is designed and implemented with integrity, transparency, and respect for both people and place.
Science-Based Nature Recovery
Our projects are grounded in robust scientific research, and evidence-based design. Environmental outcomes are quantifiable, measurable, and verifiable through ongoing monitoring. We ensure our staff stay up to date with the most current techniques in the field by attending conferences and training to provide the best solutions possible within the catchment.
Alignment with Global, National, and Local Objectives
NRT contributes to and aligns with international frameworks such as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and national climate and environmental targets. Each project meets required national, regional and local environmental plans and legislation. Designs are developed in collaboration with communities and stakeholders to ensure relevance, compliance, and shared ownership of outcomes.
Local Knowledge and Community Engagement
Projects are co-designed with the active participation of local communities and stakeholders, drawing on place-based knowledge, values, and cultural practices. This engagement strengthens social and environmental resilience, ensures projects reflect local aspirations, builds capacity within the community and enhances long-term stewardship of the local environment.
Environmental, Climatic, and Social Safeguarding
All projects are built collaboratively with longevity and the community in mind. This allows for minimising potential adverse impacts on people, ecosystems, and heritage environments. Our approach to design and implementation is always to ensure projects enhance rather than compromise ecological integrity, climate resilience, and community wellbeing.
Transparency and Accountability
We commit to transparent reporting of both projected and achieved outcomes, including environmental, and social indicators to foster confidence and accountability.
Climate Adaptation and Resilience
Projects are designed to enhance resilience to climate variability and extreme weather events by restoring ecosystem function and hydrological balance. Our interventions aim to support both climate adaptation and mitigation, strengthening the natural and built environment against future challenges.
Circular Economy and Resource Efficiency
We embrace circular economy principles, prioritising reuse, modularity, and low-carbon materials in design and construction. Projects aim to minimise waste, energy use, and embodied carbon, demonstrating practical pathways to resource stewardship.
Equity and Inclusive Benefits
Projects are developed to ensure that environmental benefits are shared equitably, particularly among vulnerable or historically underrepresented groups. This principle drives inclusive decision-making, fair access to opportunities, and shared prosperity derived from improved environmental health.
